WIND ROSE WITH MAP VIEW OVERLAY

IEM ASOS 1-MIN · KNOTS → MPH · PEAK GUST BY DIRECTION

Built because manually parsing raw Mesonet weather station data is annoying. This utility automatically organizes directional observations, converts units, summarizes recorded wind data, and overlays wind direction information onto a satellite view of the provided location. · Everything runs locally in your browser. No accounts. No uploads ever saved or transmitted. No tracking. Free to use.

If this utility saved you time or eliminated tedious manual work, optional support helps keep it online and funds continued development.

How to Use This Tool

Step 1 — Get the Data

Visit mesonet.agron.iastate.edu and select your ASOS station. Under Select Variables, choose only these four:

  • Wind Direction
  • Wind Speed [knots]
  • 5 sec gust Wind Direction
  • 5 sec gust Wind Speed [knots]

Set your date range to cover the event period. Download as comma-delimited CSV.

Step 2 — Enter Address for Map Overlay

Type the full street address of the location in the address field above. This is used to geocode the location and center the satellite aerial view.

Step 3 — Generate

Drop the CSV into the upload zone, confirm your address, and click Generate Rose. All processing happens locally in your browser — no data is uploaded anywhere.

Data Output

Results include a directional wind rose showing peak gust across 8 compass sectors, plus the following tables:

  • Directional gust events by sector — peak gust, time at advisory / elevated / windy thresholds, NWS category
  • Sustained wind speed range (avg–peak) and time per sector
  • Wind Threshold Summary — NWS threshold crossings with first/last occurrence, peak value, and total duration
  • Time in Directional Quadrant — NE / SE / SW / NW per standard meteorological convention
  • Satellite aerial of the provided address with wind rose overlaid at scale

Directional Wind Rose Peak Gust by Direction (mph)

Each sector shows the peak 5-sec gust recorded from that compass direction during the analysis period. Sector opacity reflects observation count. Speeds converted from knots (×1.15078). Time in Sector = total minutes wind came from that direction — not duration at peak speed.
